I chose makeup as my cultural artifact. It represents me as the young woman that I am today in the sense that it helps me when it comes to my confidence. It was not hard at all to find representation of makeup in the media and pop culture. As a matter of fact, makeup is actually encouraged for women in the media and pop culture. Any advertisement that has a woman in it, I can guarantee you that she is wearing makeup. At any fashion show, I can assure you that every single model is wearing makeup. Every actress on set is guaranteed to be wearing makeup. Every female artist wears makeup during their performances. All women on a red carpet wear pounds of makeup. Makeup is everywhere and is highly encouraged by the media and in pop culture. I've been wearing makeup since I was fourteen. At that time the message conveyed was that you needed it in order to be pretty. That you had to wear it to get a boys attention. It's funny because as you grow older you realize that boys actually go for the more natural looking girls. Not that a boys opinion matters in the first place but I just thought that was funny. Makeup does not really have an influence on me anymore, I kind of just wear it when I'm bored now. Consuming makeup made me feel good about myself. It made me feel secure and confident. To this day it still makes me feel good but I feel good without it too. Makeup reinforces pop culture stereotypes about my identity. Women are supposed to wear makeup to be pretty in this society. They make it out to seem like if you do not wear it then you're not pretty and if you're not pretty then you won't be desired.
